Skateboarding has been around for over 50 years, but it has become immensely popular during the last decade. There are now skateparks all over the world, and people of all ages and abilities are skating. Skateboarding is a great way to get exercise, and it is also a lot of fun. Skaters can do tricks on ramps, rails, and stairs, or just skate around town. If you want to learn how to skateboard, this guide is for you.

If you’re in the market for skateboards or surfboards for professionals, read the buyer’s guides at Outdoor Trends.

It may seem easy to hop on a skateboard and start cruising around, but for beginners, it’s not as simple as that. Skateboarding takes skill and practice to perfect. That said, with the right tips, anyone can learn how to skateboard. There’s no need to be intimidated by skateboarding when you have some tips from the experts. Here are a few pointers to help beginners get started on the right foot:

1. Wear the Right Gear

With the right gear, you’ll be more comfortable while skateboarding, and you’ll also be safer. Make sure you have a good skateboard, helmet, and pads. Wearing protective gear is essential when learning to skateboard, so don’t skip out on it. Your gear should also fit properly, so make sure you get the right size. If you’re not sure what gear to buy, ask for help at your local skate shop.

2. Find a Good Spot

Not all spots are created equal for skateboarding. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to find a spot with a smooth surface and few obstacles. A spot like this will give you plenty of room to practice without worrying about crashing into things. Smooth surfaces like sidewalks, tennis courts and parking lots are ideal.

If you’re more experienced, you can try skateboarding in more challenging locations. Try moving around to find new spots with interesting obstacles and features. This can add an extra challenge to your skating and make your sessions more fun. Just be aware of your surroundings and make sure the spot is safe to skate in before you start doing it.

3. Get Your Balance

Before you start doing tricks, you need to get your balance down. Try standing on the board in different stances to see what works best for you. Once you have a good balance, you’ll be able to concentrate on doing tricks. The more comfortable you are on the board, the easier the tricks will be. Maintaining balance is key to progressing in skateboarding.

One of the first tricks you can learn is a “Pivot.” To do a pivot, get on your board and balance on your front foot. Next, lift your back foot and place it next to your front foot. This will cause your board to spin around. Make sure you keep your balance, so you don’t fall off!

Another basic trick is the “Ollie.” To do an ollie, get on your board and balance on your front foot. Next, lift your back foot off the board and thrust it forward while at the same time pushing down with your front foot. This will cause the board to jump into the air. When you land, make sure to put down your back foot first, so you don’t lose your balance.

4. Start Small

It’s important to start small when learning to use an electric skateboard. Don’t try flipping your board or doing any big tricks right away—take it slow and easy at first. You’ll want to build up your skills before trying anything too complicated.

If you’re just starting out, try skating down a gentle slope and then progressing to a steeper one. When you feel comfortable skating down a hill, try picking up speed. Once you’re confident with your speed, try going down the hill while doing some tricks.

5. Practice with a Friend

It can be more fun—and safer—to skateboard with a friend. Not only will you have someone to help you learn, but you’ll also have company while out on the board.

Skateboarding with friends can add an extra level of difficulty to the experience, as you’ll need to keep an eye on them while you’re skating as well. This can make it more challenging to concentrate on your own skills, but it’s also a great way to learn new tricks.

6. Maintain Your Equipment

One of the best ways to stay safe while skateboarding is to ensure your equipment is in good condition. This means keeping your board in good shape and making sure all of your bearings, screws, and other components are in working order. You should also check your helmet and pads regularly to keep them in good condition.

If your equipment is in poor condition, it can lead to falls and other accidents. By keeping your equipment well-maintained, you can help reduce the risk of injuries while skateboarding.

7. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

It’s imperative to be aware of your surroundings when skateboarding. This means being aware of obstacles such as curbs, cars, and other skaters. You should also be aware of potential hazards in the area, such as cracks in the pavement or water puddles.

When skateboarding, always be alert and stay aware of what’s going on around you. This will help you stay safe and avoid accidents. Any time you’re in a new environment, take the time to do a quick check of your surroundings and plan your route accordingly. If needed, adjust your speed or take some alternate routes until you feel comfortable with the area.

8. Set a Good Example

As a skateboarder, you have an opportunity to set a good example for other skaters and the community. When skating in public, always be respectful of others and obey all traffic laws. Remember that you’re a guest in the area and be aware of your impact on the community.

Stay positive and encourage others to skate safely. Help keep the streets clean by picking up any trash that you see. If someone falls, help them up and offer some words of encouragement. Be a role model for other skaters and help promote a positive image for the sport.
