The art of knife throwing has seen a recent resurgence in popularity. Though it is an ancient form of combat, the modern thrower uses the weapon for sport and self-defense. The knives are specially designed for throwing, featuring a weighted blade and balanced handle. Throwing knives can be used to take down an opponent from a distance or to shred a target.

If you’re in the market for throwing knives for self-defense, browse through the guides available at Outdoor Trends.

It’s easy to be fascinated by knife throwing. Knife throwing seems dangerous and looks incredibly cool. But, before you grab a knife and start throwing it around, there are a few things you should know. Knife throwing is serious business and, if done incorrectly, can lead to some very bad injuries. So, before you start throwing knives, make sure to read this guide on the proper steps to follow.

1. History of Knife Throwing

The art of knife throwing can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians, who used knives as weapons in hand-to-hand combat. The Romans also developed knife throwing as a form of combat. Early throwers used their knives as standalone weapons but eventually learned how to use them in conjunction with other weapons, such as spears and bows. Knife throwing continued to be used as a form of combat up until the early 20th century.

In the early 1900s, knife throwing began to be used as a sport. The first knife throwing championship was held in Vienna in 1912. In the 1930s, the American Knife Throwers Association (AKTA) was formed, which helped to standardize the rules and regulations of knife throwing. Today, knife throwing is a popular sport enjoyed by people from all over the world.

2. Know Your Knives

There are many different types of knives that can be thrown, but not all knives are suitable for throwing. Throwing knives are typically made of stainless steel or carbon steel to resist corrosion. These knives are also typically smaller and thinner than other knives, making them more agile and easier to throw. The better the throwing knife, the more balanced and symmetrical it will be, making it easier to aim and throw.

Several different throwing knives can be used for recreational or competitive throwing. The most common throwing knife is the standard-style knife, which has a single sharpened edge and a pointed tip. Other popular throwing knives include the Bowie knife, the dagger, and the tomahawk.

3. Steps to Follow to Learn the Art of Throwing Knives

There are a few basic steps that you can follow to learn the art of throwing knives.

1. Start by Practicing with A Safe and Lightweight Knife

When you start out, it is important to practice with a lightweight and safe knife to develop the proper throwing technique without putting yourself at risk. This will help you stay safe, but it will also allow you to improve your skills more quickly.

2. Find an Open Area to Practice In

It is imperative to find an open area to practice throwing knives. This will let you get comfortable with throwing knives and improve your accuracy. This ensures that you won’t accidentally injure anyone or damage any property while practicing.

3. Master the Basic Throwing Technique

The basic throwing technique involves holding the knife in your hand with the blade facing down and the arm straight out from your body. You then need to cock your arm back and release the knife at a forward angle so that it spins end over end as it travels towards its target. This throwing technique is often used to throw daggers and knives.

The key to mastering this throwing technique is to ensure that you release the knife at the correct angle to travel in a smooth and steady arc towards its target. You should also aim to keep your arm straight and locked out throughout the entire throwing motion.

4. Aim for A Target That Is Large and Visible

Aiming for a huge and visible target is crucial in learning knife throwing. This will allow you to see where your knives are landing and make adjustments as needed. As you become more proficient with throwing knives, you can start aiming at smaller targets. Large targets, such as hay bales or inflated rubber balls, are great for beginners. Smaller targets, like empty cans or coins, are better suited for experienced knife throwers.

5. Use the Correct Grip

The grip that you use when throwing knives is very important. You want to ensure that you are gripping the knife firmly with your thumb and fingers. This will enable you to control the knife and ensure it lands accurately on the target. Using the right grip is also important for safety reasons. You don’t want the knife to slip out of your hand while throwing it.

6. Make Sure You Know the Weight, Size, and Shape of the Knife You’re Using

Different knives have different weights and sizes. You will need to make sure that you know the weight and size of the knife that you are using before you begin throwing it. This is important because you will need to adjust your grip and throwing technique accordingly. The shape of the knife can also affect how it flies through the air. It is important to be aware of these differences when throwing a knife.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice!

The only way to improve your knife-throwing skills is by practicing regularly. The more you practice, the better you will become at throwing knives accurately and safely. You need to practice at least a few times a week to see results.

Practice in different locations and with different knives to improve your skills. Repeatedly throwing a knife in the same spot will make you predictable and easy to defend against. Mix up your practice locations, and try different types of knives to get better at knife-throwing.

8. Be Aware of Your Surroundings When Throwing Knives

Ensure there is nothing behind or around your target that could be damaged if you miss. Also, be aware of the people and animals in the area. Never throw a knife at someone or something you don’t have control over.
